     SOCIAL STUDIES CHAPTER 6 STUDY GUIDE

*Terms and Definitions:
Geographer-a person who studies Earth and its people
Erosion-the wearing away of Earth’s surface
Natural Hazard-harmful event caused by humans
Satellite-a spacecraft that orbits Earth without a crew
Relative Location-when you describe where a place is located by comparing it to another place
*Skills- Map Skills, Comparing Bar Graphs
*Writing Section: What can people do to prepare for a natural hazard? People should prepare for the type of
hazard that might affect where they live. Examples: safe shelters in case of tornadoes or earthquakes. Build dams to protect flooding. Supplies needed- flashlights, first-aid kits, batteries, food, water.
*Facts To Know
*A forest is a natural resource protected by planting new trees.*Plants and animals and the environment in which they live make up an ecosystem. *The Grand Canyon was formed by erosion.*Pollution causes dirty, unsafe water.
